This manual has been developed in order to further learning, discussion, debate and the establishment of best practices in supporting the digital and holistic security of human rights organisations, networks and collectives.
Reflecting our commitment to collaboration with the broader ecosystem of organisations related (either directly or indirectly) to this field, the manual is an attempt to “open-source” our model – including internal documentation and templates – at this relatively early stage, in order to facilitate its replication or improvement.
The text itself remains a living one, and will be iterated on and expanded as we continue to learn.
This manual is oriented at people interested in holistic security processes, long-term accompaniment, or in setting up a Fellowship programme focused on digital security and on supporting human rights defenders and their organisations.
We invite security trainers and facilitators, rapid responders, human rights defenders and activists, civil society organisations and funders to read this manual and to talk to us about it. We hope it will contribute positively to current views on holistic security, the protection of human rights defenders and other related issues.
The manual has been informed by diverse pools of knowledge and experience, as well as the work of many rapid responders, holistic facilitators and digital security trainers. Within the Fellowship itself, we are constantly using and adapting practices or theories that have been introduced by other groups and organisations.
We would like to convey our gratitude to this community, as well as thank everyone who has at any time been part of the Digital Integrity Fellowship and the writing of this manual. Your input has been beyond valuable.
